Supporters of new populist candidate Rodolfo Hernandez today celebrated his catapult rise in the final round of the presidential election, in front of former left-wing guerrilla Gustavo Petro.
Hernandez surprisingly managed to eliminate right-wing candidate Federico Gutierrez, the former mayor of the city of Medellin who was previously predicted to be ranked second most voted.
Colombians seeking “change” yesterday gave a historic victory to the former left-wing guerrilla, who will face new candidate Hernandez in June.
Preliminary results showed that 62-year-old Gustavo Petro, the former mayor of Bogota, leads with 40.3 percent of the vote, compared to 28 percent for 77-year-old millionaire Rodolfo Hernandez.
Yesterday’s vote was held in a tense atmosphere of security with numerous protests from the economic and social crisis.
Some 300,000 armed police and soldiers were deployed to maintain order as the election was monitored by European and American groups.
Incumbent President Ivan Duque is leaving amid deep resentment as 40 percent of the country’s population lives in poverty.
The government’s image has been damaged by denunciations of its harsh response to weeks of anti-poverty protests, which have left dozens of civilians dead.
