A candidate who uses the TikTok network, denounces elites and praises Hitler appears to be on an equal footing with his left-wing electoral rival in Colombia’s presidency on Sunday.
John Claro, the former mayor of the town of Bucaramanga from the opposition, had a dispute over the behavior of his rival.
And in one video of the incidentit, Mayor Hernández is seen quickly losing his composure, rising to his feet and uttering a string of offensive words, and even shooting Claro in the face.
Mayor Rodolfo Hernández could become president of Colombia on Sunday.
“It seems to me that he is not mentally well,” Claro told Britain’s The Guardian.
The 77-year-old businessman Hernández likes to swear, as he has done regularly in comments on social networks, among which he once described Adolf Hitler as a “great German thinker”.
He was initially considered hopeless, but last month shocked the country by reaching the final round of Sunday’s election.
The media say that Hernández has similar features to some populist figures in the region such as the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, that of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro or Donald Trump, with experience in business, social platforms and emotional public speeches.
If his rival Petro wins, he will become the first left-wing president in the country where for most of the last century chords of cooperation have been made between the right and the center-right.
But Petro, the former mayor of Bogotá, has previously been accused of links to guerrilla groups that have fought for decades with state forces and paramilitary allies.
Colombia is considered one of the most unequal countries in the world, where the title “engineer” is used in the form of respect for a millionaire like Hernández, and where the poor pray for change.
