More than 100 Palestinians have been injured in clashes with Israeli police at the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in Jerusalem, health officials have said, according to the Associated Press news agency.
This is also the first such confrontation since the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
Israeli police said that before dawn on Friday, “dozens of masked men” marched on al-Aqsa, shouting and lighting fireworks before crowds hurled stones at the Western Wall, which is considered the holiest place for Jews to pray.
The Palestinian Red Crescent has said dozens of people have been taken to hospital after the clashes.
Witnesses said Palestinian protesters hurled stones at Israeli security forces, who fired rubber bullets at some of them.
The latest clashes come after three weeks of rising tensions and deadly violence in Israel and the West Bank.
Al-Aqsa is the third holiest place in Islam.
The Jews refer to it as the Temple Mount, referring to the two temples that are said to have stood there in antiquity.
This complex is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is located on the east side of Jerusalem, controlled by Israel./REL
