Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk is seeking UN assistance to successfully evacuate some 100,000 people trapped in Mariupol.
Vereshchuk said the UN should be involved in repairing humanitarian corridors, as it is the only organization with the capacity and strength to prevent deaths.
She stressed that the UN so far was only observing the events, without intervening.
“Evacuation is possible only with the help of the UN. The UN and Guterres need to get involved and fix the corridors. We do not have time to wait. These corridors should be installed in the coming days “she said.
Following Vereshchuk’s interview, it was announced that UN Secretary-General António Guterres would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday.
