During these holidays, especially for the Christmas holiday, the Municipality of Tirana has thought to be close to families and children with economic difficulties, to give them the opportunity to celebrate like everyone else. Mayor Erion Veliaj was today at the new Community Center Kombinat, where he distributed gifts to children of families in economic difficulties. Veliaj appealed for more solidarity during these holidays.
“I am very proud of you and I am very happy to be here today, in a bigger, more beautiful space. It is an environment where children come to do homework, where we also help some special children, who need a little more help, and make sure everyone excels. But, of course, this is also an environment for grandparents, so that they too have a place to meet each other, to eat a warm meal. I very much hope that when you grow up, you will continue this work. If we grow up in this city with love, the city becomes even better than it is. “If someone needs a good word, to knock on their door and say happy holidays, it would warm their hearts a lot,” he said.
The mayor said that the center offers not only a shelter and warm meals for the elderly and people in need, but also services for children with different abilities, such as physiotherapy, art therapy and free speech therapy.
“The fact that hundreds of children receive services here, do their homework here, receive the help of a psychologist, a special treatment and therapy, is an extraordinary help for their families. It may not really seem like a great public deed can be, but I believe the greatest deed in the city, its most important asset, are the people. I have seen cities without asphalt, cities without trees, without pillars, without tiles. But cities without people I have not seen. The work we do with people to make sure that in this city it does not matter if a child lives in Kombinat, Ndroq, Vaqarr, Astir – so if it is visible in the suburbs – it does not need to be in the suburbs of attention ours. “The city also has a center, it also has a suburb, but as long as the services are equally dignified and the chances for boys and girls are equally equal to move forward in life, we have accomplished our mission,” he underlined.
Thanking the staff for the commitment shown in the service to the community, Veliaj said that the Community Center Kombinat serves as an example, while providing for the increase of the number of services that will be provided. “I am very grateful to the staff who works, those who deal with therapy, psychologists, those who work in the kitchen, who do the outpatient service at home. I greatly appreciate your work! I have not seen a social center with these conditions in Europe either. Now that we have the conditions, the work becomes a little easier, we have the opportunity to increase the range of our services and the capacity of services. “Under this example of the Social Center of Kombinat, we must build an etalon of what a modern service means and what a center that has all the conditions means”, stressed Veliaj.
As it has already turned into a tradition, the Municipality of Tirana, in the framework of the end-of-year holidays, has thought this year to be as close as possible to the children who attend community centers together with their family by distributing gifts.
