The leak from the chlorine truck while supplying to the Aquatics Center pool complex in London today triggered a “chemical reaction” that left dozens of people unable to breathe at the plant, and ordered residents to keep their doors and windows closed.
More than 200 people were evacuated from the sports facility and businesses around it in east London as people who could barely breathe were treated by medical teams in the complex parking lot.
One person was being given ambulance in the emergency vehicle while many swimmers were seen running to escape still in bathing suits.
Firefighters said a large amount of chlorine was released inside the pool center after a “chemical reaction” as they called it, while the company was receiving “shipment of pool chemicals”.
Footage from the scene showed the blue truck with hydrochloric acid deposits abandoned outside the building shortly after the incident.
Experts say hydrochloric acid and pool chlorine should never be mixed together as they can release chlorine gas.
Chlorine gas is a deadly substance used as a weapon of war and is fatal if inhaled into the lungs.
“Due to a chemical reaction, a quantity of chlorine gas has been released and ambulances are treating a number of patients,” London firefighters said in a statement.
Witnesses described as symptoms symptoms difficulty breathing, some of which were lying on the sidewalk.
More than 20 ambulances and fire engines were seen around the building in the Stratford area of east London this morning.
