Chinese President Xi Jinping has boasted of “complete victory” in efforts to eradicate extreme poverty, saying his country has achieved a “human miracle”, although many questions surround the communist regime’s criteria for such a claim. .
In a festive ceremony, Xi handed out medals to officials from rural communities and promised to share the “Chinese example” with other developed nations.
“No country can lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty in such a short time. “A human miracle has been created, which will go down in history.”
Xi Jinping had promised that extreme poverty would disappear by 2020, with the aim of creating a prosperous society on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the party, which is marked in July this year. By 2020, Beijing said it had achieved its goal of removing people above the poverty line with an income of $ 2.30 a day. This figure is slightly above the lowest figure set by the World Bank – $ 1.90 – but is below the amount recommended for high-income countries.
The World Bank has said that China has lifted more than 800 million people out of extreme poverty since it returned to market reforms in the 1970s, after decades of state planning based on the communist state. But now, the Chinese president goes even further by saying that Beijing is also helping developing countries, which still face poverty.
