China will take “dramatic measures” if Taiwan moves towards independence, a Beijing official warned on Wednesday, adding that Taiwan’s provocations and foreign intervention could increase next year.
China considers Taiwan as its territory and in the last two years has increased diplomatic and military pressure, which has raised concerns in Taipei and Washington.
China has been ready to achieve peaceful reunification with Taiwan, but would act if a red line for independence was crossed, said Ma Xiaoguang, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Bureau of Taiwan Affairs.
“If separatist forces in Taiwan provoke independence or cross the red line, we will have to take drastic measures,” Ma said.
Taiwan has become a key factor in relations between China and the United States.
The US is recognized as Taiwan’s most important international supporter and largest arms supplier, despite the lack of formal diplomatic relations.
China regularly describes the island as the most sensitive issue in its relations with the US.
Although the United States recognizes only one China, they are required by law to provide support to Taiwan in self-defense, and for some time now they have pursued a policy of “strategic uncertainty” whether to intervene militarily to protect Taiwan in case of any Chinese attack.
