Armed police in southern China had today staged a ‘shame parade’ of four people accused of violating anti-Covid restrictions, prompting media criticism of a ‘totalitarian health utopia’.
The four suspects, dressed in protective anti-infective clothing, held up signs with their names and photos in front of crowds gathered on the street in Jingxi City, Guangxi Province.
The published photos of the shocking event showed each of the suspects being held by two police officers, also wearing masks and protective clothing, surrounded by other police officers with weapons.
Public embarrassment has been part of the government’s extreme disciplinary measures for those who violate government restraint rules.
The development comes at a time when the Omicron version of the virus is much weaker than the original Covid-19, but the Chinese government is defending it with its declared “zero-covid” policy.
China had halted its policy of public humiliation of criminals in 2010 after decades of protests by human rights activists, but is now suspected of justifying a return to the origins of global health curfew policies.
Earlier it was reported that residents of one of the country’s largest cities sought help because they had no food as they were not allowed to leave their homes after only a few cases of infection appeared.
Government officials in Xi’an City told 13 million people they were not allowed to leave their homes and were being called in for mass tests for a so-called “medical emergency”.
Local media reported that the four individuals in the parade on the streets of Jingxi were accused of illegally transporting people between the borders and cities closed by the pandemic, wrote the Guangxi News network.
Jingxi is near China’s border with Vietnam.
The newspaper said the parade was a warning against border crimes.
But many media criticized the harsh approach and warned of the opposite consequences.
“Although Jingxi is under pressure to prevent foreign coronavirus cases, this measure violates the spirit of the rule of law and should not happen again,” wrote the pro-government Beijing News.
