The Beijing ambassador to Washington made it clear that if the Taiwanese authorities continue to walk the path of independence with American support, it will most likely result in a “military conflict.”
Beijing Ambassador to Washington Kin Gang spoke to National Public Radio (NPR) to clarify the Taiwan issue and articulate for the first time the possibility of war with the US.
“Let me emphasize this. The Taiwan issue is the biggest impasse between China and the United States. If the US-encouraged Taiwanese authorities continue to pursue the path of independence, then it is very likely that all this will end in military confrontation.”.
China considers Taiwan democratically ruled as its “sacred” territory and has never abandoned the idea of using force to secure eventual unification.
Asked for comment after the statement, the US Department of Defense said the United States remains committed to its “one China” policy and its commitments under the US Taiwan Relations Act.
Under early policy, Washington formally recognized Beijing, not Taipei, but the act required the United States to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself.
