Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged $ 500 million in aid over the next three years to Central Asian countries to strengthen their economies and security.
President Xi said the funds would be used “in projects involving people’s lives”.
He made the remarks during an online summit with the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Beijing and the five former Soviet states.
The Chinese leader also pledged to donate 50 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine to these countries this year. He said Beijing could also transfer vaccine technology to those countries.
China has sought to deepen relations with countries in the region, but has been cautious as Moscow sees the former Soviet republics as part of its so-called sphere of influence.
