China is facing criticism over human rights ahead of the Winter Olympics, which kick off on Friday.
Activists have spoken of intimidation, questioning and security officials telling them to refrain during the Games.
“I think we can reasonably assume that those who have not been detained, disappeared and are abroad have been silent these days,” said Sophie Richardson of Human Rights Watch.
Human rights activist Hu Jia, who has complained about harassment of dissidents by security officials, has been out of reach.
The 48-year-old, who is under house arrest in Beijing, has previously spoken to the American newspaper, the New York Times about warnings from security officials.
“They have said that if I do not remain silent, my right to visit my mother may be violated,” Hu said.
There has also been criticism from Germany.
The head of the Budget Committee for Human Rights, Renata Alt, said that “the most serious human rights violations are taking place in Beijing, in forms that are unprecedented so far.”
The Winter Olympics will be held from February 4 to 20.
