China today announced sanctions against four members of the US Government Commission on Religious Freedom, in retaliation for measures taken against Chinese officials accused of violations in the northwestern province of Xinjiang.
Today’s announcement (Tuesday) further increases tensions between the two countries around Xinjiang province. Washington has banned the importation of goods produced in the region, allegedly produced by the forced labor of prisoners and internees. China denies the allegations.
U.S. officials under sanctions from China include Religious Freedom Committee chairwoman Nadine Maenza, Deputy Chairwoman Nury Turkel, and members Anurima Bhargava and James Carr. They will not be allowed to enter China, Hong Kong and Macau.
China had said it would retaliate after the Treasury Department announced on December 10 sanctions against two Chinese officials for their involvement in suppressing the Uighur minority and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang province./VOA
