China has approved three Chinese traditional medicine (TCM) products for sale to help treat Covid-19, the Government Administration of Medicinal Products announced on Wednesday.
According to CNN, the agency used a special approval procedure for the three products, which “offer more opportunities for Covid-19 treatment,” a statement was quoted as saying.
The herbal products come in granular form and have their origins in “ancient Chinese recipes,” the statement said.
They were developed from TCM healing tools that had been used early in the pandemic and that were “controlled by many academics and experts on the front line.”
However, their safety and effectiveness are still debated in China, where there are both supporters and skeptics.
Although many of the remedies in TCM have been used for hundreds of years, critics argue that there is no verifiable scientific evidence to support their supposed benefits.
“Traditional medicine is a treasure trove of Chinese civilization that embodies the wisdom of the nation and its people,” said Chinese President Xi Jinping, a well-known TCM lawyer, at a national conference in October 2019.
Throughout the outbreak of the pandemic, Xi has repeatedly urged doctors to treat patients with a “mixture of Chinese and Western medicines.”
In fact, tens of thousands of patients with Covid-19 received herbal medicines in addition to major antiviral drugs last year, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.
