In the last photo taken before he dies, Abe steps up to speak at the podium as the killer stares at him from behind.
A few minutes after taking the photo, the attacker shoots with his homemade weapon, fatally wounding him.
After two loud shots Abe is seen holding his chest with his hand.
The police arrested a 41-year-old veteran of the country’s army with a homemade weapon as a suspected assassin.
Japan’s current prime minister called the killing a “heinous act”.
A possible explosive device was found in the suspect’s house, the local NHK network reported.
Japan is considered one of the safest countries in the world and has strict gun control laws.
In television footage Abe he is seen falling to the asphalt with his chest covered in blood, as security guards run towards him.
He was rushed to the hospital where he received a blood transfusion but did not survive.
This is the first assassination of a Japanese politician since the days of pre-war military rule in the 1930s.
