27-year-old Victoria, who managed to escape from the besieged city of southern Ukraine, Mariupol, tells 5 Live Breakfast how she left her family behind while fleeing to a village about 20 km away.
“My city is destroyed absolutely ” she says, in a voice that trembled as she described listening to the daily bombings of Russian attacks.
“People are staying in the basement, but it is not safe. “They are bombing, and the strong basements are being destroyed.”
She says many people do not have food and water.
“Three children I know died of dehydration. It’s the 21st century and children are dying of dehydration in my hometown. “They are starving to death now.”
Victoria adds that she was unable to help other family members leave Mariupol and is desperate to get them out.
“I will stay in Ukraine and try to save my family in Mariupol. “Mariupol is my life, I do not understand why I have to leave my city, my country because of Russia.”
