Electricity has been restored to the dismantled Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which is under the control of Russian forces, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday.
“Today, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Ukrainian energy specialists, our nuclear engineers and electricians have been able to restore power to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which is under the control of the Russian occupiers.”said the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, German Galushchenko.
“At the risk of their lives, our engineers have been able to prevent a nuclear catastrophe that threatened the whole of Europe“, He added.
The power supply was cut off at Chernobyl after Russian forces took control of it.
At Chernobyl in 1986, the world’s largest nuclear disaster struck, killing hundreds of people and causing radioactivity to spread across Europe.
Russian forces also took control of the Zaporizhia plant on March 4. This is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. During the fighting, a fire broke out at the plant, raising concerns that a nuclear catastrophe could occur.
