Actors Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy had an explosive relationship during the filming of the legendary action movie “Mad Max: Fury Road” which often degraded into screams and curses that astonished the directors and cast of the production.
In a new documentary it is shown how their working relationship functioned with swearing from the dirtiest, where Theron offended Hardy with all the available vocabulary when he let her wait along with the caste in the shooting.
The allegations are made by New York Times journalist Kyle Buchanan in his new book, The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road.
In some parts of it published by the magazine Vanity Fairthe production shows how Theron, now 46, has always held a female producer in defense of Hardy.
Hardy played the title character, who in the first three series was played by Mel Gibson. And Theron was the young warrior ‘Imperator Furiosa’, one of the former commanders of the negative emperor Immortan Joe (played by Hugh Keays-Byrne) who then turns against her boss and joins Max.
Double actress Natascha Hopkins, tells in the book how Theron did not prefer to waste time on haircut, as she was also a mother and had to share time with the child.
But cameraman Mark Goellnicht recalled how Hardy often came late to filming so Theron in some cases waited for his colleague for more than two hours at the set, despite the costume and makeup of the movie scene.
“There she emptied it all, she was very nervous waiting for the shooting to start and the insults to Hardy came of all kinds. And in fact he was right. “It was a little distance away and there was a gust of wind – but he heard most of the shouting.”
The cameraman says Hardy became aggressive and approached his colleague saying, “What did you tell me, one more time?”
From this time Theron sought a man for protection in the shooting. “I looked for a female producer in order to balance the weight in some way, because I did not feel safe,” says Theron.
But anyway the actress adds that in the shooting she was again known as ‘naked and lonely’ as the producer Denise Di Novi had to go to the office and could not stay in the shooting, according to the orders of the producer Doug Mitchell.
Screenwriter Kelly Marcel points out that the quarrels between the actors became very intense even though they were with each other all day and had already turned into some ‘members of a family’.
She points out that Hardy was a very physical man and always tried to try new things with his acting, while Theron was ‘accurate, cerebral and consistent in the way he approached a character.’
Hardy himself says the pressure was sometimes unbearable.
“Maybe she needed a more experienced role colleague, things like that you can not do with lies, getting away. “I prefer to believe that I am already older and uglier, I would like that,” he said.
Goellnicht also says that by the end of filming Hardy “had become another person” and then befriended Theron in the final stages of production.
Although Hardy once said he wanted more episodes of his character Mad Max, it is not known if he is working on these films.
