Five Central European states, all members of the European Union, are calling on the bloc to grant candidate state status to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“This is a signal from our governments that the Western Balkans is important for the EU”, said on July 13 in Budapest, the Austrian Foreign Minister, Alexander Schallenberg.
The Foreign Ministers of the group called C5 – Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia – requested that the issue of candidate status for Bosnia and Herzegovina be on the agenda at the next EU summit, to be held in October. .
In June, Ukraine and Moldova received the status of a candidate country for EU membership.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, a state still suffering from the effects of the 1992-95 war, was not included in the status acquisition during the June summit.
Of the six Western Balkan states, only Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo do not have candidate status.
At the end of June, the leaders of the six Balkan states complained about the lack of progress in their efforts to join the EU, before the bloc decided to grant status to Moldova and Ukraine.
The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, welcomed the granting of candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, but emphasized that these two countries should not have any illusions.
He had emphasized that Albania and other Balkan countries have had the candidate status for years. North Macedonia received the status in 2005 and Albania in 2014.
