After 20 years, Northern Macedonia conducted the population census through a new Eurostat methodology and with new technology electronically, despite all the political debates, as Deputy Prime Minister Artan Grubi said, the constant obstacles and not insignificant challenges.
The process is considered a success, despite the fact that there are citizens who are not registered, but such a thing is considered common by EuroStat. The figures show that in the general population of our neighboring country,
where Macedonians are at the level of 54.21%, Albanians occupy 29.5%. 24.3% is their number in the resident population, and 22.8% in the capital Skopje. When it comes to non-resident population, Albanians result in those who emigrate more, 66.36% compared to 24.45% who are Macedonians.
Clashes between political parties began three days before the results of the Census were published, and a few days ago VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski criticized the SDSM and DUI governments, saying that Social Democrat MPs and ministers were captives of the Democratic Union for Integration. The leader of this party, Ali Ahmeti, focused today on the fact that, as he said, the country now, after two decades, has a clearer picture in terms of the total population and the percentage of communities in the country.
“I congratulate all the institutions that were involved and helped the Census as a process that began in March last year with the country’s diaspora and ended in September with the census, a process and challenge not at all easy but that we managed to finish with success “, he wrote on Facebook.
VMRO-DPMNE claimed that the census was not a statistical process but a political one, accusing the ruling parties of rigging the results in terms of the percentage of the population, especially the Albanian one. It had even secured 100,000 signatures last year against the census process.
