At least 17 people have been killed after a cargo ship sank near Madagascar. The gruesome event happened this morning and investigations are ongoing to find 60 more missing, local port authorities say.
The ship was carrying 130 people and 45 have been rescued so far, according to Captain Jean-Edmond Randrianandenaine, director general of Maritime and River Services (APMF). ““Investigations are continuing for others.” he added.
The ship was not allowed to carry passengers, but they boarded and departed from Adana.
It is a wooden cargo ship, which was destined for Soaneirana-Ivongo, about 100 km south. An APMF spokesman in the city said the ship initially had a problem with the engine.
“She was trapped by the waves and then hit a rock.” explained Adrian Fabrice Ratsimbazafi.
A team of police officers have gone to the scene and authorities have already launched a criminal investigation into the accident. Many locals have been involved in the search for the bodies.
