Canadian police say they shot dead a polar bear that was approaching a community in the Quebec region several hundred miles south of its natural territory, as such relocations are becoming more frequent due to changing seasonal ice rates.
The Sûreté du Québec police warned residents over the weekend of spotting the bear near populated areas, which was the predator’s first approach to the community.
Experts later said he was killed Sunday morning.
Officials said they had used drones and helicopters to locate the bear.
“We work with different animals, deer, bison, black bears, but it was the first time we had to deal with a polar bear,” said Sylvain Marois, of the Quebec wildlife conservation agency.
Polar bears already have to spend more time on earth and this can turn into a problem in their encounters with human communities.
But despite the elimination, catching and moving a polar bear can cost thousands of dollars, not owned by all communities.
“Killing a bear is the last thing on a wildlife official’s mind, but we have to keep people safe, as well as the wildlife when we can,” he said.
