Canada announced today that it had agreed in advance for $ 40 billion in compensation for indigenous children who had been taken from their families and placed under the welfare system.
The deals include $ 20 billion for hundreds of thousands of potential indigenous children who have been taken from families and have not had access to or had difficulty accessing public services.
An additional $ 20 billion has been earmarked for social care reform over the next five years. One Canadian dollar is worth about $ 5.24. The Canadian government announced last month that it would allocate $ 40 billion in compensation, but did not disclose details until Tuesday. The deal comes nearly 15 years after the Canadian Indigenous Association filed a lawsuit for human rights violations.
Indigenous children are disproportionately represented in foster care across the state. Canada has acknowledged that its system is discriminatory, but has consistently refused to pay compensation and fund reforms.
This is the largest financial settlement of its kind in Canadian history and the final agreement must be finalized by March 31 this year.
