Canada should completely ban the purchase and sale of all pistols, said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
His government is proposing a new law that provides for the freezing of private ownership of all short-barreled firearms.
The legislation does not provide for a complete ban on the ownership of these weapons, but only makes their purchase illegal.
Trudea’s proposal comes days after deadly gunshots were fired at a Texas primary school in the United States, killing 21 people.
The bill, which was introduced before the Canadian Parliament on Monday, makes it impossible to buy, sell, transfer or import pistols anywhere in the state.
“Apart from the use of firearms for shooting and hunting, no one in Canada has a reason to use firearms on a daily basis,” Trudeau told reporters.
“As we see an increase in gun violence, it is our duty to act,” he said.
This move constitutes his Government’s most serious attempt to restrict access to firearms.
Unlike the United States, the Canadian constitution does not mention the right to bear arms, but they are accessible and people keep them mainly in rural parts of the state.
