The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, participated in the high-level meeting “Call for Global Action on Food Security” at the UN, at the invitation of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The meeting brought together senior state representatives, representatives of international organizations and partners to discuss urgent humanitarian and development needs, as well as to identify steps to address global food security.
Minister Xhaçka said that Albania supports the role of the UN as a key actor in addressing food crises in the world. He called the call for action for Global Food Security as a timely initiative to deal with crises that are deepening day by day.
“More people are at risk, more people are moving towards poverty, and what is just as worrying is that the crisis poses a serious threat to the peace and stability of many countries and regions.” said the chief diplomat.
She added that despite differing views between states, it remains a shared responsibility to work together to break the vicious circle of conflict and address food insecurity.
“Albania is committed to working together to identify challenges, solutions and support the work of specialized agencies of the United Nations to achieve short-term and long-term solutions to the global food security crisis.”Minister Xhaçka concluded her speech.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and other senior UN officials briefed ministers on the rise of food insecurity, its global impact, and the steps the UN is taking in response to food insecurity worldwide. .
Current conflict crises around the world, the aftermath of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine threaten to destabilize fragile societies, deepen extreme poverty, increase hunger, expand humanitarian needs, increase migration, and cause further economic crisis.
