A Labor opposition senator in Britain has been banned from speaking on the senate podium after falling asleep during a major debate on Wednesday.
Lord Young of Norwood Green was ordered to sit down when he got up to speak at a discussion on genetic modifications of foods.
The complaint came from Conservative member Baroness Bloomfield who said the senator had been completely asleep during the environment minister’s speech so he could not contribute to the debate.
When the 79-year-old objected, saying he was “no longer asleep,” Bloomfield said he had only been awakened by one of the hall staff.
The comic developments came during the debate over the rules whether Britain should deviate from European law on genetically modified cereals.
Lord Young initially said: “I want to take part in the debate as I am in my position as a supporter of staying in the EU, but if there are two things I welcome from the common market one is the ceiling of this genetic modification and… ‘
But Lady Bloomfield intervened, saying: “I’m sorry but the honorable senator was completely asleep during the minister’s speech so he should not take part in the discussion he did not hear.”
Lord Young replied that ‘he was not asleep’ but Lady Bloomfield said: “It was because I was forced to send someone from the staff to wake you up.”
British Environment Minister Lord Benyon said the draft on genetically modified organisms allowed Britain to remain at the forefront of research on modified cereals.
