British Prince Andrew has recently been revealed by the media to have had three meetings with Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi and a deep friendship with an internationally known arms trafficker.
The Queen’s son’s ties to the Gaddafi regime have come under deeper scrutiny following the recent sex scandal and the mystery surrounding his income.
The British daily The Sun quotes local finance expert David McClure as saying that Andrew’s private fortune remains shrouded in mystery after many questions were raised about his extravagant lifestyle.
Andrew’s ties to Libya date back 20 years, since he visited an arms trade fair in Jordan with his spokesman Robert Olney.
In 2005, Andrew was introduced to renowned Libyan arms trafficker Tarek Kaituni, once married to Dutch supermodel Lisa van Goinga.
Kaituni, who also has American citizenship would later boast of his influence over the Prince and arranged his meetings with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Kaitun spent several years in a Paris prison for arms trafficking before being released from a suspended sentence and a 10,000 Euro fine.
But none of this seems to have bothered Prince Andrew, writes The SUN, who enjoyed a few days off with Kaituni in Tunisia in November 2008, shortly before visiting Colonel Gaddafi in Tripoli.
Before Andrew lost his role in the commercial chain, Kaitun was invited to the British Princess’s birthday Beatrice in August 2009, where he presented her with a diamond pendant worth more than $ 25,000.
Prince Andrew’s ties to Libya go further as in July 2007 he attended a party hosted by a Libyan businessman in the Saint Tropez resort, where he was photographed dancing with American aristocrat Chris Von Aspen.
A year later in July 2008, he is seen dancing with Libyan model Nadia Boejna at another party in Saint Tropez, this time hosted by French tycoon Claude Ott.
In the summer of 2008, Andrew reached his meeting with the Libyan dictator, invited by his Tunisian son-in-law Sakher El Materi.
The matter was close to Tunisian President Zine Ben Ali, who was overthrown in a 2011 coup.
Materi left Tunisia for the Seychelles after the revolution and was later convicted of corruption in absentia.
In June 2011 he and his wife Leila were sentenced to 35 years in prison for misappropriation and misuse of state funds.
A spokesman for Britain’s Buckingham Palace said at the time: “[Andrew] “He has officially met with Gaddafi only once, but there have been many other private cases as the prince’s job is to have serious relationships with key individuals.”
“This is always improving British interests on behalf of the Foreign Office and the Commonwealth, on behalf of British companies.”
Gaddafi’s son has been received at the royal palace, although after the overthrow of the leader in 2011 he has faced charges of crimes against humanity.
