The Kremlin condemned Britain’s plans for sanctions against Russian companies based in the UK and vowed to respond if the need arose.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said London would introduce new sanctions legislation against “any company linked to the Kremlin and the regime in Russia”.
The comments were condemned by the Russian government spokesman. “This is a disturbing statement from London, not just for our companies but for the structure of international finance,” said Dmitry Peskov.
He added that London was showing instability in its conduct and called the latest move an “open attack on business”.
“The British government is threatening big business, among other things. “The Anglo-Saxons are massively escalating tensions on the European continent.”
He further added that Russia would respond with “its measures if Russian companies are hit” without giving further details on how this would happen.
