Every woman is at risk of breast cancer, so doctors advise that the checks are not only performed during breast cancer awareness month, which is the month of October every year, but to be visited regularly, starting from adolescence.
“The biggest problem in Albania is that often when we detect breast cancer, in almost 80% of cases, it is at the stage when it has reached the 4th stage of development, which means that it has metastasized or affected the axillas, armpits , making our fight against breast cancer almost impossible at this stage. A woman with normal breasts, i.e. without breast pathology, should have a routine check-up once a year. Of course, from the age of 13, you should start carrying out checks, because breast pathologies are divided into two groups, in pathologies that are called benign, while breast cancer, which is a malignant pathology of the breast, generally appears at the age of over 30. For all women from the age of puberty to the age of 40, the first protocol examination for breast control is ultrasound, while mammography is an examination that uses X-rays, that is, it has ionizing radiation and is recommended for women over 40 years of age. What we notice is a group of women who come for a routine check-up, and that is few and the rest are patients who normally show pain in the chest or breast, who present to the doctor for fear of cancer”, said Dr. Almir Skana, Imaging Doctor.
In 2020, there were 2.3 million women worldwide diagnosed with breast cancer and about 700,000 deaths worldwide.
“Covid also certainly affected breast morbidity. Covid 19 is a condition that puts the organism in a state of stress. It is known that stress causes oxidizing substances in the body, which are the main causes of malignant degeneration of the breast, and on the other hand, often vaccination against Covid or the infection itself can cause enlargement of the axillary lymph nodes, which are several glands in the armpit, but which are not problematic. because they are the result of the body’s inflammatory reaction and are not related to breast cancer, but any patient who touches a gland in the armpit or something that is not right in her breast, must definitely have a check-up with a specialist.” said Dr. Almir Skana, Imaging Doctor, Polyclinic No. 3.
