A drug trafficker known as “Pablo Escobar of Brazil” was arrested in Hungary on Tuesday after more than a year on the run.
Sergio Roberto de Carvalho, was arrested after a collaboration between Interpol and the Hungarian police, said the Federal Police of Brazil, describing him as “one of the biggest international traffickers today”.
“The author obtained a death certificate in Spain and used pseudonyms, as well as various documents to conceal his identity.” said the police.
According to Brazilian media, Carvalho is a former police officer who has long lived in Europe with a false identity.
He was initially arrested in Spain but after paying for his release, staged his death by Covid disappeared from the radar.
Police say assets worth hundreds of millions of euros have been seized from criminal activity. The organization led by Roberto de Carvalho trafficked cocaine to Europe from Brazil.
