The Rio de Janeiro Carnival returned with brilliant colors and jewels last night to the first samba parade after a two-year suspension in Brazil.
The festivities kicked off Friday night with the extravagant dancers of the best samba schools on the opening night of the two-day festival.
After two years of disgusting masks, distances and vaccinations, dances and orchestras regained control of the ‘Sambadrome’ parade stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
The arena has become a symbol of carnival celebrations since the 1980s as it was turned into a shelter for the homeless during the time of isolation.
“I’m very happy, a lot of people will cry… including me,” said Ana Vieira, a 48-year-old geography teacher who has attended the carnival for 20 years, dressed in a magnificent costume representing the Imperatriz samba school. .
She further told the AFP network: “Carnivals are our life. “You can see the happiness on people’s faces after two years of isolation.”
The holiday was marred by the tragic death of an 11-year-old girl who was hit by one of the parade cars at Wednesday’s rehearsals.
Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes commented: “Little Raquel’s death leaves us all with a sense of sadness. “We are monitoring the police investigation to determine responsibilities and provide support to family members.”
Ketula Melo, 38, an Imperatriz Leopoldinense school dancer dressed as the Afro-Brazilian saint Iemanja said she was happy to be back in Sambadrome.
She said: “These two years have been terrible. “Now we can rejoice again.”
After three months of preparation for the dancers and drummers of the orchestras last night conveyed the rhythm and lyrics of their songs.
A chair at the Sambadrome cost about $ 50, while prices are somewhat higher for tourists.
