Military groups in boats searched the Javary River and the Brazilian Amazon today to find British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian indigenous Bruno Pereira missing in the remote area after receiving threats.
The government of the country vowed today to make every effort to find them while relatives warned that every minute mattered.
Senior journalist Dom Phillips, 57, and respected indigenous expert Pereira, 41, were last seen sailing near the border with Peru on Sunday.
Phillips was researching for his book and was expected to return Sunday morning to the town of Atalaia do Norte but never returned.
The pair were traveling across the region to interview local leaders on illegal mining or fishing operations in the area, for Phillips’ next book.
“Federal police have been mobilized to search for and locate the two missing as soon as possible,” authorities said in a statement.
“The Brazilian government will support the search operations and the urgency of the case. “If the disappearance is the result of criminal activity, all steps will be taken to catch those responsible,” they added.
Indigenous population groups in the region said the two men had received threats last week, without mentioning their reasons or motivation.
