The death toll from heavy rains and floods in Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia rose to 26 late Monday, with 715,634 people affected by the natural disaster.
The local Civil Protection Observatory said in a statement that 26 people had lost their lives due to continuous rainfall since November, while the number of injured had reached 518.
It is further reported that 30,915 people have lost their homes and 62,731 have been evacuated.
In addition, 166 cities have been affected in the state, home to more than 15 million people, the statement said, adding that a state of emergency has been declared in 154 cities.
At least 37 cities in southern Bahia were completely submerged in the floodwaters.
