Rescue workers and officials in Brazil’s mountain town of Petropolis say the death toll from landslides caused by torrential rains has risen to at least 104, including about 13 children.
The rains started on Tuesday, causing streams that swept through houses and cars. According to authorities, 80 houses were destroyed. Search-and-rescue operations continued into Thursday. About 500 rescue workers joined the residents, in an effort to find some of the missing, the fate of at least 35 people is not yet known.
On his Twitter account, President Jair Bolsonaro, who was on a trip to Moscow, wrote that he had talked to Regional Development Minister Rogerio Marinho and Economy Minister Paulo Guedes to provide assistance to the city.
