Prime Minister Edi Rama at a press conference with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell.
Borrell: I am very pleased to be in Tirana today with you and your government. Albania is my second stop on this visit. Let me thank the Prime Minister Edi Rama with whom I had good discussions. I will meet with civil society who play such an important role for the country’s democracy. We all know that this is a critical moment for us for the EU, for the whole world, including Albania, it is a critical moment, so we must discuss these issues.
It is horrible how the Russian leadership is attacking Ukraine indiscriminately, it is an attack on civilians including women, children, hospitals. The forces are inflicting heavy damage and we all have before the brave resistance of Ukraine, we will persistently continue our support, despite the pressure of Russia. In response to this aggression, we have adopted a fourth package of tough sanctions to increase pressure on the Kremlin.
The measures they are taking will have an impact on Russian trade, on the export of goods, we have also targeted critical sectors. We have 800 individuals and companies playing a role, the clique about Putin. This is another major blow, on which Putin is getting resources to fund it.
Albania has shown that it is one of the strongest partners of the EU, Albania has reconfirmed its commitment to international order and security. As a member of the UN, she has been a co-sponsor and co-sponsor of the resolution against Russia. Albania is a NATO ally and security provider. I am grateful to you, it is an important contribution.
We are living in moments and stability and being united is very important. You, the Prime Minister, have said that we no longer need words but deeds, the time has come to revive the process. Albania has fulfilled all the conditions on time, I strongly support the work and I will support the opening of negotiations. There is no date but it is the horizon. My colleagues and I are all committed, committed, all institutions have understood the importance of representing Europeans. This must be met on that concrete horizon. It does not depend on me but on all EU institutions but we are working as hard as possible. I want to congratulate you on your work.
