Heavy traffic jams, flight cancellations, disturbances in rail services: record snowfalls have plunged the northern and western regions of Japan into chaos.
Thousands of homes have been left without electricity, but while the situation in these areas is aggravated, there are no reports of deaths or injuries related to severe weather.
Government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno announced that the highway in the Shiga region had been closed by “blocked vehicles”. The film footage showing long queues of vehicles was the best illustration of his words.
“A strong atmospheric pressure motive is causing heavy snow, mainly in the regions near the Sea of Japan and in the northern and western areas, some of which have had record rainfall,” the official said.
He called for increased vigilance as the rains that have started for Christmas do not seem to end yet and are said to continue. Nearly 130 domestic flights were canceled on Sunday due to snow, and another 50 on Monday.
