Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro arrived in Russia where he met with his counterpart Vladimir Putin, at a time when Russia is under Western pressure not to invade Ukraine.
Brazil confirmed diplomatic ties with Kiev yesterday in a phone call between the two foreign ministers, the Brazilian government announced shortly before Bolsonaro’s departure for Russia.
The minister had reiterated the country’s support for a peaceful solution, saying Brazil and Ukraine had just celebrated the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Bolsonaro condemned US pressure and met with Putin, where they discussed ‘bilateral trade ties’.
“Brazil is one of the largest agricultural producers and exporters in the world, but we are very dependent on Russian fertilizers,” Bolsonaro said, justifying the trip.
On Thursday he will visit Hungary. Western analysts said the timing of Bolsonaro’s visit to Moscow was “the worst it could be.”
