Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced today that he has no plans for a personal meeting between President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, amid rising tensions over the accumulation of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine, reports Reuters.
“I think we need to see if, above all, there is any diplomatic progress. “We also want to see the cessation of Russian military operations, the movement of forces across the border with Ukraine, to reduce tensions,” Blinken said when asked if there would be a meeting between the two presidents in an effort to defuse tensions.
Putin today blamed the West for escalating tensions in Europe. At the enlarged Defense Ministry board meeting, Putin said Russia is ready to take military-technical measures if NATO approaches its borders.
Putin noted that NATO was expanding eastward after the Cold War, despite, as he put it, the almost allied relations between Moscow and the West at the time.
He also said he hoped for constructive talks with Washington and Brussels on Moscow’s request for security guarantees, as, as he assessed, there are signs that the West is ready to work on this issue.
