Russia’s restriction on Ukrainian wheat exports may have contributed to Sri Lanka’s unrest, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, and expressed concern that the situation could lead to other crises around the world.
Blinken repeated calls for Russia to allow some 20 million tons of grain to leave Ukraine, which Moscow seized in February.
“What we are seeing around the world is increased food insecurity that has been significantly exacerbated by Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Blinken told reporters in Bangkok on July 10.
Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, has been wracked by weeks of unrest caused by severe food and fuel shortages.
Millions of tons of Ukrainian grain are exported annually to Africa, the Middle East and other parts of the world.
But exports have been halted as the Russian navy is blockading Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.
