President Joe Biden has called the wife of basketball player Brittney Griner, who has been arrested in Russia, and pledged to work to win her release as soon as possible, the White House said Wednesday.
Griner was arrested in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. According to the police, she was transporting e-cigarettes with cannabis oil.
Biden’s conversation with Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, comes after Brittney Griner wrote a letter to Biden on Monday.
In the letter, Brittney Griner told the president she feared she would spend life in a Russian prison. She has been in custody for four months.
On July 1, she appeared at the court session in Moscow, after more than four months since she was arrested.
In a closed-door hearing, Griner’s detention period was extended for another six months.
The arrest and trial of the American athlete comes at a time when relations between Moscow and Washington are at their lowest point.
Griner was arrested less than a month before Russia sent troops to Ukraine, further raising tensions between the two countries.
