US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin briefed President Joe Biden on US options to respond to a Russian invasion of Ukraine, including the deployment of US troops in the area.
As Biden ponders these possibilities, the State Department ordered the families of U.S. embassy staff in Kiev to leave on Sunday and authorized non-emergency diplomatic staff in Ukraine to do the same. The DASH also warned Americans not to travel to Ukraine or Russia, citing the possibility of Russian military action, as well as “the potential for harassing foreigners in Russia,” a spokesman said.
Among the options presented to the U.S. military before an invasion were bombing planes over the region, sending ships to the Black Sea, and moving troops and military equipment from parts of Europe to Poland, Romania, and other countries bordering Ukraine.
Austin presented opportunities to secure NATO allies and strengthen their defenses, particularly the defense of border states with Ukraine increasingly at risk of conflict.
The aim is to show unity and strength among NATO and prevent Russian aggression against allies in the region, US officials explained. President Biden was also presented with evidence from the US intelligence services, which showed that the Russian army is continuing to gather troops near Ukraine.
