During the joint meeting with the leaders of the countries of the Persian Gulf, the President of the United States Joe Biden emphasized on Saturday that the United States will continue to be an active partner engaged in the Middle East.
He presented the main principles of the American strategy for the Middle East, focused on regional cooperation in the face of regional risks and the activities of China, Russia or Iran.
US President Joe Biden said he is aware of the challenges in the Middle East, but that he thinks there are some areas where the United States can help bring positive results.
He made the comments at the meeting in Saudi Arabia of the leaders of the Persian Gulf, which was also attended by the leaders of Iraq, Egypt and Jordan.
“Across the world efforts were seen to undermine the rules-based world order. China’s increasingly coercive actions in the Pacific and beyond, Russia’s brutal and unprovoked war on neighboring Ukraine, Iran’s destabilizing actions here in the Middle East have brought fundamental changes.”said President Biden.
He emphasized, however, that this is the first time that American forces are not engaged in combat in this region.
“For the first time since 9/11, the US president is visiting the region while US forces are not engaged in combat missions in the region… Let me state clearly that the United States will continue to be an actively engaged partner in the Middle East”said President Biden.
Noting the partnership in the fight against terrorism, President Biden emphasized that the risks will be faced together through regional cooperation and that the United States will not leave, thus creating a vacuum that would be filled by China, Russia or Iran.
Among the bilateral meetings that were awaited with interest was the one with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, due to concerns about the state of human rights in the country and in particular the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The moment of the fist-pumping meeting between President Biden and the Saudi prince evoked comments and criticism, such as from Democratic Lawmaker Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, from the fiancee of the late Khashoggi, or the director of the newspaper “The Washington Post” where the deceased contributed.
Asked by journalists, President Biden clarified that during the meeting he had repeated to the Saudi prince that he considers him responsible for the murder of the journalist and that he considers the way critics of the Saudi administration are treated, inside or outside the country, to be a violation of human rights./VOA
