US President Joe Biden has turned a bipartisan arms document into law, the biggest federal reform in three decades, days after the Supreme Court extended gun rights.
“This is a great day”said Biden in the White House.
“By the will of God, this law will save many lives.”
The Supreme Court ruled for the first time Thursday that the U.S. Constitution protects an individual’s right to bear arms in public for self-defense.
In 2020 alone, more than 45,000 Americans died from guns, whether by suicide or suicide. This has been the year with the highest number of such victims, recorded in American history.
Arms control has recently become a divisive issue in the United States, as many attempts to control their sale have failed one after another.
The new legislation includes provisions to help states keep weapons out of the hands of those considered dangerous as well as block the sale of weapons to those convicted of abusing unmarried partners.
Legislation does not prohibit the sale of high-capacity rifles or cartridges.
For the first time, the law provides for checks to be made on a juvenile’s past before a weapon is purchased, and this document targets buyers who have been convicted in the past of domestic violence.
Biden reiterated criticism of the Supreme Court ruling on Friday, which eliminated the constitutional right to abortion.
He said that his administration will focus on the countries that will implement this decision and ensure that they do not violate other laws.
How was the abortion decision made?
The 1973 decision Roe v Wade was approved by the Supreme Court by seven votes to two.
Through this decision, women have the right to terminate their pregnancies.
The decision gave American women the absolute right to an abortion in the first three months of pregnancy, but allowed that procedure in some cases even in the second trimester.
The reversal of this decision has resulted in mass protests in many American states. REL
