US President Joe Biden sent an open warning to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
The head of the White House does not think that Putin wants a full-fledged war, but neither does he rule it out as a possibility. He said Moscow would pay a “high price” if it carried out a military strike.
Biden: I’m not so sure that Putin is convinced of what he wants to do. I think however that he plans to attack. But the cost of entering Ukraine is going to be high for the Russians; the consequences for them will be severe.
Biden hinted that he would restrict Russia’s access to the international banking system if Moscow further invades Ukraine. His comments came hours after Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, during a visit to Kiev, accused Russia of planning to further strengthen the border, adding more troops, in addition to the estimated 100,000 it has so far deployed.
Blinken suggested that the figure could be doubled “with a quick decision”. He gave no details on the allegations, but what is known is that Russia has sent an unspecified number of troops to its ally Belarus, which also borders Ukraine, for major military exercises next month.
