US President Joe Biden meets with key allies in Brussels and Warsaw this week as part of Western efforts to prevent Russia’s war against Ukraine from escalating into an even greater catastrophe.
Biden fears that Russia could use chemical or nuclear weapons as its occupation is not proceeding as Moscow predicted and has faced major logistical problems and fierce Ukrainian resistance. Humanitarian challenges are growing, too.
Millions of refugees have fled the fighting, mostly crossing the border into Poland, and the war has endangered Ukraine’s wheat and barley crops, increasing the possibility of increasing hunger in impoverished areas across the globe.
Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security adviser, said the president would coordinate moves with allies on military aid to Ukraine as well as new sanctions on Russia.
He added that Biden is working on long-term efforts to boost defense in Eastern Europe, where many countries fear Russian aggression.
““In the meantime, he will push for the idea of reducing the continent’s dependence on Russian energy.” This war will not end easily or quickly.“Sullivan told reporters.
He also cited Putin’s threats of nuclear weapons, saying Biden would discuss “possible answers” with allies if the Russian leader took that step.
