US President Joe Biden has told his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, that the United States fully supports Ukraine’s sovereignty as the Russian military rallies near the Ukrainian border.
Biden has “reconfirmed his unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the White House said on December 9 after the two presidents held a telephone conversation that lasted about 90 minutes.
President Biden also “made it clear that the United States and its allies and partners are committed to the principle that decisions and discussions on Ukraine will not be made without Ukraine’s involvement,” the statement said.
He also reiterated the position that the US and its allies will impose economic sanctions on Russia and increase aid to Ukraine if Russia invades Ukraine, the White House said.
Biden also spoke with the leaders of nine NATO member states in Eastern Europe, with whom he spoke about the gathering of the Russian army on the border with Ukraine.
At the virtual meeting between Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin on December 7, the two leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine.
Biden had warned Moscow it could face “severe economic sanctions” if Russian troops invade Ukraine.
Russia denies plans to attack Ukraine, and Moscow is seeking guarantees against NATO expansion to the east.
