Agron Gjekmakaj describes the battle between Lulzim Basha and Sali Berisha as a struggle for two party models, “Sali Berisha’s post-communist transition party and the Democratic Party of the decade or decades of tomorrow”.
In his speech at the National Assembly, convened by the official DP, MP Gjekamrkaj stressed that “The DP is everyone’s party and as such can not allow the crisis of a political personality like Sali Berisha, who has dominated the transitional DP to determine the fate of the Democratic Party for today, tomorrow and forever”.
“Sali Berisha’s personal crisis of personal personality, his personal relations with the United States of America, are just a spark that made all the problems accumulated during 30 years explode. Many people can be responsible here, but no one as much as Sali Berisha can be responsible for creating these problems and wounds that we have. “For this reason, few at the top can believe that he can be a healer of the wounds he has inflicted.”.
The Democratic Party acknowledges its identity crisis. “She is acknowledging and must be convinced that her identity cannot be the identity of the leader, which has happened so far with her relations with Sali Berisha. It must be separated from Berishism as society was separated from Enverism! Each separation has its own dimension of pain and sadness, but also the seed of a new beginning. This is exactly why it must be said from the beginning that Berishism today is the envy of democracy“, Says Gjekmarkaj.
According to the MP, the former Democratic leader is going so far as to condition the longevity of the DP, the opposition and the Albanian right.
“Sali Berisha liked the reception! Sali Berisha had to sacrifice a little of the boundless ego for power in order not to lead the DP into this fierce self-destructive conflict. He had to do this for the thousands upon thousands of Democrats who have followed him over the years, who have supported him in difficult days, who have elevated him to the heights of power that have made him prime minister, president, who have sacrificed endlessly for him. On his shoulders could have stood such a shocking act as the declaration ‘non gratta’ but no, he ignited the imaginary war with the US provoking the pro-American vocation of the Democrats. He did not leave us the opportunity to long for and get involved in nostalgia, he separated us as he has always done, giving us familiar epithets”.
In the statute of the Democratic Party, according to Gjekmarkaj, it should be written in capital letters that whoever loses the elections, certified by the OSCE-ODIR, should leave the leadership of the party.
Gjekmarkaj finally addressed the leader of the Democrats, Basha: “A historical responsibility falls on you. The membership of the Democratic Party has voted for you by 83%. This happened at a critical time for the DP. You will have to make difficult decisions, and we will have to make difficult decisions, the most difficult of which I think is breaking away from a political tradition of ours that has brought us to this point of crisis. Build your model of leader by leaving the Berisha model to history”.
