The Minister of Interior, Bledi Çuçi on Saturday afternoon reacted regarding the protest called by the former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, stating that acts of violence and attempts to disturb public order will not be tolerated by the State Police.
Through a post on the social media Facebook, Çuçi writes that the police “proved that it is a depoliticized body and fully committed to securing the lives and property of the citizens”.
He also congratulated the State Police for professional behavior in guaranteeing public order and security, in the protest called by the former leader of the Democrats, Sali Berisha.
“The State Police is determined to continue the work and mission assigned to it by law“, Concluded Çuçi.
The protest of the supporters of the former leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, ended after the Police, using water cannons and tear gas, removed the protesters from the headquarters of the Democratic Party.
The January 8 protest was called by former DP leader Berisha to take control of the party headquarters.
He argued that the leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha was “fired” from this post, through an intra-party referendum held in December last year. This referendum was initiated by Berisha.
The protest closed more than three hours after it began, as Berisha warned he would not give up his intentions to take control of the DP headquarters.
The protesters tried to enter the PD headquarters, but a few hours after the protest started, the headquarters was surrounded by police units and law enforcement officials said that a citizen and a policeman were slightly injured during the clashes.
Police said the intervention was made at the request of a group of Democratic Party MPs “who have asked for police aid, after endangering life from protesters.”
Today’s protest marks the culmination of a move that Berisha undertook against President Basha, after the latter’s decision to leave him out of the parliamentary group, due to the decision of the United States that declared the former prime minister non grata.
The US said that Berisha was involved in widespread corruption and that is why he was barred from entering the US.
On December 18, 2021, Berisha initiated a referendum, through which it was said that Basha was “fired” by the leader of the Democratic Party.
Last month, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Gabriel Escobar said it would be a “consequence” if the Democratic Party elected a leader who has been described as a “persona non grata” by Washington.
