The Belarusian opposition leader, who staged mass protests against the leader, Alexander Lukashenko, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison. Sergei Tikhanovsky was convicted of organizing riots among other charges following a trial convicted of fraud.
He planned to challenge Lukashenko in the 2020 presidential election, but was stopped before the vote.
His wife, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, faced Lukashenko, who claimed victory in the widely discredited election.
She won the August election herself, but, fearing for her safety, was forced to emigrate with her children the next day.
On Tuesday, Ms Tikhanovskaya questioned the validity of the court that tried her husband and told the BBC that his sentence was “personal revenge” by Lukashenko.
