Former Georgia President Mikheil Saakashvili could die if he does not receive proper care, doctors who visited him in prison have warned.
Saakashvili has twice gone on hunger strike in recent months to protest his imprisonment. When he went on strike for the first time, the 54-year-old did not consume food for 50 days and it has already been about 20 days since he went on hunger strike again.
Some doctors who examined Saakashvili in prison said he was suffering from a severe neurological disorder, anorexia and post-traumatic stress disorder.
They have demanded that Saakashvili be urgently transferred to a hospital. Saakashvili, who ruled Georgia from 2004 to 2013, was arrested and jailed in October 2021 after returning from Ukraine where he lived for 8 years. He was convicted of abuse of office but has denied the allegations and says his imprisonment was political.
His arrest exacerbated the political crisis in Georgia that erupted after the 2020 parliamentary elections, which were narrowly won by the ruling party but according to the opposition were manipulated.
